"Had a nice day with Kashi! He took us everywhere we asked, and we made good use of our time. We managed to see Zenkōji Temple, Togakushi Shrine and trail, Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, a brief walk in Shibu Onsen (although basically nothing was open at the time- we weren't looking to bathe but thought we could at least find a restaurant. Nope. Utter ghost town in the afternoon), the Hokusai Museum and Takai Kouzan Memorial Hall in Obuse, and Gansho-in Temple with a bit of time to spare. We started and ended in Nagano, so less time is probably available if you start further out. The snow monkeys were the highlight (they were very active that day)! I wish we knew in advance that the main interior of Zenkōji was not open yet- we were just able to walk the grounds (in the rain) and watch a morning ceremony from the side, but given the number of temples we've seen this trip, that wasn't a major issue. All in all, this was a great way to see the Nagano area."

How a Private Charter Day Runs

Pickup at Your Tokyo Hotel
Your driver collects you in central Tokyo early enough to reach the valley while the macaques are still at the hot spring. The drive is roughly three and a half to four hours each way.
Walk Into the Valley
Vehicles stop at the Jigokudani car park. From there it is a forest trail along the Yokoyu river to the park gate — flat but unpaved, and icy underfoot for much of the winter.
Time at the Hot Spring
The macaques come down to the pool on their own schedule. Most tours allow around two hours inside the park, which is what makes the difference between a glimpse and a proper visit.
Nagano on the Way Back
Many itineraries add Zenko-ji temple, Shibu Onsen or a soba lunch on the return leg, then drop you back at your Tokyo hotel in the evening.

When a Private Charter Is the Cheaper Option
The arithmetic most visitors run the wrong way round.
Eighty-five of the ninety Tokyo departures in our catalogue are private charters, and almost all of them are priced per vehicle. That is the single most important thing to understand before comparing anything, because it inverts the ranking a price sort gives you.
The arithmetic
A charter at $383 covers the car — typically up to five or six passengers — for the full ten-hour day. Split between four people that is about $96 each, below the $102 per-seat fare of the per-seat tour we compare. Split between two it is $192 each, and the per-person tours start to look better. There is no universally cheaper option; there is only a break-even point, and it sits at about three people.

The charters we review run from $383 to $457, so the break-even shifts a little with the tour you pick, but the shape holds: from four people up, the whole-vehicle fare wins, and it brings the temple stops with it.
What the fare actually covers
The better charters include highway tolls, fuel and parking, which on a 500 km round trip is not a rounding error. Most include hotel pickup and drop-off anywhere in Tokyo’s 23 wards — not airports or ports — along with water in the vehicle and a Wi-Fi hotspot. What none of them include is park admission: ¥800 per adult at the gate, rising to ¥1,000 on 1 December 2026. Carry cash in yen.
The vehicle matters more than the listings admit. Most operators run a Toyota Alphard or Vellfire, which is comfortable and has room for luggage; at least one runs a jeep or SUV, which is the surer footing on the valley road after fresh snow and the tighter fit for suitcases. If you are travelling with skis or checked bags, ask before you book.
The stop count is where charters oversell
Several of these itineraries list five stops — Jigokudani, Zenko-ji, Shibu Onsen, Obuse and a castle. Seven to eight hours of the day is already committed to driving. Five stops is therefore forty minutes each, which is a photograph and a walk back to the car.
Three is the honest number, and the advantage of a private vehicle is that you choose which three. Tell your driver at pickup. The default sequence most drivers run is the monkey park first and the temple on the way home, which works because the pool is fullest in the late morning.
Who this is not for
One or two travellers pay a premium for the privacy. If it is just the two of you and the budget matters more than the door-to-door convenience, take the shinkansen to Nagano — eighty minutes, about ¥8,000 — and join a local operator there, where park entry and lunch come included. And if you specifically want Zenko-ji rather than a monkeys-only run, the temple combinations allocate real time to it rather than a photo stop.

"Our guide Alex was very good. he suggested an earlier pick up as we were scheduled for 8am, but we got picked up at 7 to miss the traffic. the drive to nagano was about 3 and a half hours - alex pointed out landmarks such as mt fuji along the way and gave us information on the towns we passed. when we got to the monkey park, it was about a half hour walk up the mountain. the track was uphill at the beginning and the end, but mainly flat and not too bad. we didn’t see the monkeys initially so decided to walk back down to do another excursion, however as we got back near the bottom my friend checked the monkeys live feed and they were there so we went back up! this did mean we spent extra time at the monkey park and alex was very patient about this! he also recommended zenkoji temple after which was beautiful. we had a great time on our tour and alex did give us some extra time beyond the 10 hours. thanks again we loved it!"
