Good to Know & Caveats

• The driver is a driver, not a licensed guide — several guests have said so in their reviews, and it is worth knowing before you book if you want commentary at the temple.
• The park is reached on foot: 1.6 km each way from the Kanbayashi Onsen trailhead, about 25 to 30 minutes, mostly level but frozen underfoot for much of the winter.
• Park admission is paid at the gate and is not included: ¥800 for adults and ¥400 for children, rising to ¥1,000 and ¥500 on 1 December 2026 (¥880 / ¥440 if you buy an e-ticket online).
• The macaques are wild and come down to the pool on their own schedule. Numbers thin out from September to November, when food is plentiful higher up the mountain.
• Extra stops on the way back are offered as time allows rather than guaranteed — the drive alone accounts for seven to eight hours of the day.
